Solar Water System

Solar water system: Solar water system is one of the very important and beneficial parts of   SOLAR TECHNOLOGY especially where electricity is high in cost or unavailable, where government is unable to give them grid power.
Solar Pump
Solar water system can be categorized in many ways but in technical term where water is supplied using solar technology basically described as solar water system
It can be many things:
i)                    Solar Irrigation (mostly)
ii)                  Solar home water system
iii)                Solar Farm system
iv)                Solar thermal system

In Every Solar Water System there could be possible few things in common i) Solar Panel ii) Solar Pump iii) Solar pump controller/Inverter ) Water Pipes

Solar pump can be both AC or DC
Unlike solar thermal system is different.
Solar thermal system is for heating water using the sun light energy ....but in this article I will talk about only solar water supply system which needs pump...

In this section I will talk about
i)  how to calculate cost
ii) how to choose a pump
iii) how to establish  a system

Before installing  any pump system in any project , first discuss about  what are the options of pumps are available...In real life perspective you probably find three types of pump for the water system...

1) DC Solar Pump   2) AC Solar  Pump 3) Traditional Centrifugal Pumps

In most of the household system, traditional centrifugal pumps are using as a water provider pumps not because only its good performance but also its lower price, unlike solar pumps is literally costly pumps....

Centrifugal Pump
If you want to know more about centrifugal pumps then follow this link

This pump is awesome pump and cost effective and very useful... best for household system...because of its power rating (0.75 Hp~ 30Hp)..

It is used by both household and commercial water supply and many others...
In household system this kind of pump power rating is maximum 2Hp = 1500Watt system but In industrial case it can be 30Hp = 22380 Watt system.....Centrifugal pump can be both single phase (220V -240V system) as well as three phase (4 wire 440V-480V system)...But in household system most are single phase system...

The Price of this kind of pumps are way cheaper than comparing the same rating solar pumps, it needs at least 1 lakh BDT to install a Solar Pump system and it is the minimum, you want more then pay more..

If you living in the area where local government can provide you grid power then I don't think anyone need Solar Pump System in their house but if you are living in a locality where grid power is unavailable or it is a irrigation purpose then you have two choice, either you go with generator or solar pump, you don't have any other choice...

But generator pumping are costly , and you should hate that but Solar pump System give you better performance because it is renewable,so cost is limited here , unlike diesel generator are high with fuel cost, you can die by paying that.

Comparison Between Centrifugal Pumps Vs Solar Pump (AC&DC)

  •  Centrifugal pump are cheaper and easy to install comparing Solar Pump
  •  Centrifugal pump are better for house hold system because of their easy installation and cheaper price,       and monthly bill will not affect much...It might cost you max 50~90 BDT.
  •  Solar Pumps are high in performance like in same power rating give more Head (m) and FLow Rate..
  • Solar Pumps are the best choice for grid powerless places because generator sucks, but you can keep as backup...
  • Solar Pumps are one time cost because it is renewable and its monthly cost free...
  • Solar pumps are long lasting then centrifugal pumps..
  • Solar pumps are best choice for Irrigation..
  • Solar pump are best choice for submerge case....

Note : more or less both kind of pump has its benefit , but I will support centrifugal pumps for only household case because in household case water flow rate and head count are low, so choose centrifugal pump if you want save money but if you want your house free from grid power  then solar pumps is your friend ....In other cases like if you need higher flow rate or deeper head(m) count or  you need water supply where grid power is not available then Solar Pump is your friend.

How to choose a Pump : Choosing a pump completely depends on your demand , what type of installation you want , how much water you need on daily basis and how much cost you can handle..if you can answer this questions you are ready to take the first step before you go for the dealers or the constructors.....

The First step of of everything is to calculate your daily water need , second where is the water source and how deep is the water source and third how much money is in your bank...Then go for the dealer..

How to calculate daily water need : This is crucial and  you have no equation for this but rule of thumb is observe and have a research that how many family member do you have and how a single person can waste water....like an example you drink water. take bath, cook food, wash cloth, floor and car, it may be around  80~150Litrs per person , then multiply with the family member, if you have 6 member then it will be 480~900Litrs water for family...if there are more family and they need water too then calculate for them too, but keep your water need a little bit higher then the target, like an example if your family need 900Litrs of water then take it as 1000 Litrs....

So your Demand of water is 1000Litrs, now go for the source of water, how far it is from your house and how deep it is , is it from a pond or a tube well or  other sources...calculate the distance and depth of the source then calculate the Head (feet/meter).
Solar Pump

Centrifugal pump

Dynamic Head = {distance from house (source) + depth (source)} (feet/meter) +friction loss........(i) (This equation is for Solar pump), For the centrifugal pump it is different..Total Head = Suction Head + Static Delivery Head+friction loss......
Assume your Head is 80m  ...

After calculating this you have now .. Water need 1000Litrs , Head  80 (m)
then calculate Flow rate (litre/hour).... In your case , Flow rate =( demand/working time of the pump) litrs/ hour....assume you want to run your pump for 2 hours..Flow rate = 1000/2= 500litrs/hour...

So you have now two main information  Head (m) and Flow rate (litrs/hour)....Now you can talk with the dealers, before buying your pump , go to internet and find out the catalogue of pumps available of the dealers.

In every pump catalogue you will find three main information i) power (Watt/Hp) ii) Head (ft/m) iii) Flow rate (lit/hr)..

So use your statistics which is here Head = 80m , Flow rate = 500Lit/hr, and find out which pump match the best.....

The demonstration of Pump catalogue will be similar , you can find your pump by comparing your Head(m), and Flow rate (L/hour), In this catalogue we can see two pump can fulfill our need , one in the 10Hp and another 5.5Hp, both can give you more then 8om Head and flow rate >>>>> 500L/hour..but choosing 10Hp make no sense because then it will high in price at every way including monthly bill...choosing 5.5 Hp is the best.... :)

Choose the best pump and then start the construction .....But these all is only for small family which is a household system and I strongly suggest you to go centrifugal pump if your locality is under country grid power system , but what if you need pump for irrigation or farming where no grid power available then you have no choice but go for solar pump, please don't go for generator pumping system those will kill your money slowly and also not environment friendly...

Use the same calculation what I have showed you above, calculate the Head (ft/m) and daily Flow rate (litr/hr) you need and find out which Solar Pump is best for your irrigation or farm , just as simple...Find out the dealer Solar Pump catalogue and see which is match the best or better, and which is the best budget friendly....Alhamdulillah

Costing : Costing of the pump installation will vary project to project, In Bangladesh to install centrifugal pump system can cost you 20000BDT~50000BDT, where solar pump can cost you 1lakh BDT~5lakh BDT or more...this is all assumption , to know precise price contact your dealer....

The Installation tutorial will be give in the Training video basic........

Hope you learn something from it (jajakallahu khair)
