How to understand Battery ratings part 1 @ (AH /WH)

To establish a successful solar system battery is the key , your whole system will depend upon            this thing.
Better you understand before you buy it ........

First we need to learn battery body readings , an example like the picture

This is a VRLB Lead acid batteries....

6GFM100 is the model number of this battery....this is very important , grab and google it, You can find detail about this battery .... http://www.compu-power.co.za/6gfm100-c-power-battery.php.
In every battery you will find readings something similar like this , lets get started

Chart will tell you voltage , Current and power,
Here is something which is you need to understand the best , which is 12V100AH/10HR, this  kind of readings has different meaning, like in 12V100AH/10HR battery is a 12V battery which can provide (12V x 100AH ) =1200 Watt-hour...= 1200WH ,this is the fundamental energy that this battery can store and provide..This battery is compatible with and under 1200WH system ...

but this is not all 12V100AH/10HR, also mean this 12V battery can provide 10A constant current per hour through 10 hours... if your house has electrical devices which total current is below <10A then this battery can give you 10 hour constant service....but this doesn't mean it can only give you max 10A... if you follow the specification chart http://www.compu-power.co.za/6gfm100-c-power-battery.php.of this battery you will see this battery can give max 1000A for 5Sec....but this will cause a a lot of energy loss through internal resistance...

There are other details like cycle use voltage , standby use voltage
* When a battery is being used as a power source on a regular basis and it is being discharged and subsequently recharged, the battery is said to be in cyclic use , in this case it is 14.40V- 15.00V...
* Standby use batteries are meant to act as an emergency power source where the main power source has failed for some reason. Consequently standby batteries are kept fully charged so that they can kick in immediately. The batteries remain connected to a trickle charger that will keep the battery fully charged and ready for use.
in this case it is 13.50V - 13.80V, this also is called Float Charging Voltage...These batteries can be very long lived if they are charged at a float voltage....

Creating a 24V 120W system using Solar 12V 60W Panels

120W Solar System

In Engineering Simple & Basic  things are most important, if you don't understand the basic there is no chance to move forward to advance engineering.......

In this simple project I can explain you the best way possible how to create a 120W 24V off grid Solar system using two 60W 12V system....

This project is very simple you can do this by yourself.....

Things yo need :
1) 60W 12V Solar Panels (2)
2) 50Ah 12V Batteries
3)Charge Controller ( 10A)
4) Cables & MC4 Connectors

First Set up the panels

0
Picture A
Picture B

Open the Junction box rear of the12V 60W Picture A Solar Panels, you will see like Picture B, After you open the junction box you will see 3 connection points i) positive ii) negative iii) common ...

you will see two back to back bypass diode is connected trough the middle point is the common point...

front side of the back to back diode, in this case the right terminal of the diode is positive (+)
and the other terminal is negative (-)...

Now Connect your cable as you see in the Picture B, one terminal of you cable should go the the junction box and another to the MC4 connector...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGksTZpEGJI See this link if you don't know how to connect MC4 connectors to cables....

After completing the work in the junction box, closed it and connect two of the 12V 60W solar panel like in the Picture A...

After connecting the two panel together you will get 24V 120W solar system
Now give your connection like the first picture .......

120W 24 V output cable will go to the 10A Charge controller...
10A Charge controller output will go to the Series connected batteries which is now 24V 100Ah battery storage,

The Series connection of batteries is exactly same as solar panel but for the connectors use battery connectors or crocodile wire connectors...

Now you have it, a fully functioning 120W 24V Solar System , to see the Electrical Appliance please see..

Series Connection of Solar Panel

In the case of series connection, the positive terminal of the one solar panel connected to the negative terminal of the other solar panel and vice versa, in this case the voltage of the system increased and the current remain constant and power of the system combined. like the example given above 3 200W 12V panel has been connected in series fashion which outcome is a 600W 36V system....This is a very small system  and can be used for small purpose like solar irrigation, but in real practical life this kind of series connection use in vast manner in big project like mini grid solar power system where output voltage of the whole Solar Array  is about 300V~500V......
Solar mini grid

In solar mini grid system, connections are both series & parallel, series connection is for  increasing voltage and parallel connection is for increasing currents....In both case power will add up....

Parallel Connection of Solar Panel

Parallel Connection of Solar Panels

In Parallel connection the both positive terminals of the solar panel  and the negative terminals of the solar panel combined through MC4 Connectors , In parallel connection the voltage of the solar system stay constant with the parallel connection but the current increased . In a system where input voltage need constant but we need higher currents like an 12V 1000W DC off grid solar system , there is no 1000W solar panel in the market , the maximum you will find 200~300W, but all of the are in 12V~24V system.
If a system needs  12/24V 1000W DC power from solar ,considering all loads are DC, then we have no choice but using parallel connection of the solar panels, Like an example paralleling 5, 200W 24V or 10, 100W 12V solar panels  where the power will be stored in the 12/24 batteries as DC power. Connection should be looks like picture given below.
